1. Cuál es tu lugar preferido de la ciudad en que vives?

What’s you favorite place of the city you live in? I learned that the world is a vast complex farrago of beauty. The world has layers and layers of styles taking place simultaneously, it happens they are not regions though, but instead hybrids of cultures, races, creeds, and values. But at the same time there is no more ‘local’ and we should all think globally- I am brought up globally and I see the world as if I came form another planet – observing, perceiving, engaging, contributing. I am working in 26 countries right now – every city is evenly inspiring to me from Istanbul to Belgrade to Tokyo to Stockholm to…

El mundo tiene capas y capas de estilos que toman lugar simultáneamente, sucede que no hay regiones sino híbridos de culturas, razas, credos y valores. Pero a su vez, no existe mas lo “local” y debemos pensar en lo “global” –he sido llevado a la globalidad y veo el mundo como si viniera de otro planeta– observando, percibiendo, dedicandome, contribuyendo. Estoy trabajando en 26 países ahora, cada ciudad es igualmente inspiradora para mi desde Estambul a Belgrado, desde Tokyo a Estocolmo…

2. La película que más veces has visto?

What’s the movie you’ve seen most? My favorite films are until the end of the world’ by Wim Wenders , TXH1138 , Tron, anything by Film directors Andrei Tarkovsky, Stanley Kubrick, Won Kai Wong, David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Mike Figgis, Francis ford Coppola, Dario Argento, Werner Fassbinder, and Werner Herzog.

3. Describe un día normal para tí:

Describe a regular day for you: I have crazy days in the office. I must sleep 7 and 1/2 hours exactly or I have trouble performing. I wake up at 8:00 am, brew the strongest fresh cup of coffee, answer all my e-mails (usually European or Japanese at that time), then go to the office (I live above my office – a hyper convenient and enjoyable condition – allows me to work very late), review issues with my office manager, answer more e-mails, write articles, proposals, etc. then go down the list of projects – meet with each one of my staff (I probably review / work on the design of 20 projects in a day with my staff – I have about 40 projects going so I manage to get to each project every other day ) , so each project perpetually inspires the next.

Tengo días de locura en la oficina. Tengo que dormir 7 horas y media exactas o si no tengo problemas en mi desempeño. Me despierto a las 8:00 am, preparo la taza de café más fuerte y fresca, respondo mis e-mails (a esa hora usualmente europeos y japoneses), luego voy a la oficina (vivo arriba de mi oficina, una hiper conveniente y disfrutable condición que me permite trabajar hasta muy tarde), reviso temas con el jefe de mi oficina, respondo mas e-mails, escribo artículos, propuestas, etc. Luego me sumerjo en la lista de proyectos – me reuno con cada uno de los miembros de mi staff (probablemente reviso/trabajo en el diseño de 20 proyectos al día con mi equipo. Tengo alrededor de 40 proyectos andando, entonces me las arreglo para llegar a cada proyecto un día si, un día no, y así cada proyecto perpetuamente inspira al siguiente.

4. Cuál es tu mejor manera de perder tiempo?

What is the best way for you to waist your time?I have no time to waste. I have crazy days in the office. I must sleep 7 and 1/2 hours exactly or I have trouble performing. Beyond that I travel 220 days of the year on lectures, meeting with clients, opening art exhibitions, etc.

No tengo tiempo que perder: Tengo días de locura en la oficina. Tengo que dormir 7 horas y media exactas o si no tengo problemas en mi desempeño. Me despierto a las 8:00 am, preparo la taza de café más fuerte y fresca, respondo mis e-mails, luego voy a la oficina (vivo arriba de mi oficina, una hiper conveniente y disfrutable condición que me permite trabajar hasta muy tarde), reviso temas con el jefe de mi oficina, respondo mas e-mails, escribo artículos, propuestas, etc. Luego me sumerjo en la lista de proyectos – me reuno con cada uno de los miembros de mi staff (probablemente reviso/trabajo en el diseño de 20 proyectos al día con mi equipo. Tengo alrededor de 40 proyectos andando, entonces me las arreglo para llegar a cada proyecto un día si, un día no. Además de eso viajo 220 días del año a dar charlas, a reuniones con clientes, a inaugurar exposiciones, etc.

5. Cuál hubiera sido tu oficio ideal pero imposible?

What would it be your dreamed (but impossible) job? Nothing is impossible but I have always dreamt of being a rock star or movie star.

Nada es imposible pero siempre he soñado con ser un rockstar o una estrella de cine.

6. Cuando haces zapping en la tele, en qué canal terminas cayendo siempre?

When you watch tv, what’s the channel you always end in? I don’t watch TV, I watch movies on planes.

No veo tele, veo películas en aviones.

7. Cuéntanos una manía insoportable que tengas.

Tell us a bad habit of yours: Perfectionism.

Perfeccionismo.

8. Cuál fue el último disco que compraste y la última canción que bajaste de internet?

10. Cuál fue el primer libro que no pudiste soltar?

What was the first book you couldn’t stop reading? I remember reading about Raymond Lowey when I was 11 years of age. I also admired so many artists from all the books scattered in the house. I loved Andy Warhol, Rodchenko, Picasso, Calder, Corbusier, Dec Chirac, YSL, Halston, and so many other artists that were pluralists.

Recuerdo haber leído sobre Raymond Lowey cuando tenía 11 años. También admiraba a muchísimos artistas de todos los libros desparramados por la casa. Adoraba a Andy Warhol, Rodchenko, Picasso, Calder, Corbusier, Dec Chirac, YSL, Halston, y a tantos artistas que eran pluralistas.

11. Por qué rosado? (nos encanta en todo caso)

Why pink? (we love it! btw) My favorite colors are white, pink, and silver for clothes, and for interiors I think pink (although there are so many variations and shades of pink) is a positive and very orgilous colour – that is why I picked it – pink is the new black! The pink is also clear which communicates the idea of immateriality, entropy, and energy, of strong optimistic presence.

Mis colores favoritos son blanco, rosado, y plateado para la ropa, y para interiores pienso que el rosado (aunque hay muchísimas variaciones y tonalidades de rosado) es un color muy positivo –por eso es que lo elijo– el rosado es el nuevo negro! El rosado es muy claro también para comunicar la idea de inmaterialidad, entropía y energía, tiene una presencia fuerte y optimista.

12. Recuerdas algún objeto que hayas diseñado inspirándote en la mujer?

Do you remember an object that you have designed inspired on women? My injection molded plastic high heels for Melissa were inspired by women. But women are the most beautiful design object of all time.

Mis zapatos de taco alto de inyección de plástico para Melissa fueron inspirados en las mujeres. Pero la mujer es el más bello objeto diseñado de todos los tiempos.

13. Qué etapa del proceso creativo es la que más te gusta?

What stage of the creative process do you like the most? It is hard for a designer to see ‘their’ own style and define their place in the world themselves. I try to always have some level, even a nuance, of originality or innovation in my work whether it is a new material, a new human behavior, new form, new production method, new market, new message (be it wit, humor, emotion, meaning, political agenda), new experience, or new concept. If I can imbue more than one of these issues into each project I am doubly satisfied.

Es difícil para un diseñador poder ver “su” propio estilo y definir su lugar en el mundo por si mismo. Siempre trato de tener cierto nivel, aunque sea un matiz de originalidad o inovación en mi trabajo, ya sea un nuevo material, un nuevo comportamiento humano, nueva forma, nuevo método de producción, nuevo mercado, nuevo mensaje (ya sea agudeza, humor, emoción, significado, postura política), nueva experiencia o nuevo concepto. Si puedo imbuir mas de uno de estos conceptos en cada proyecto me siento doblemente satisfecho.
